Ganja Glossary

For years, the cannabis conversation has come with a neat little rule: indica for the couch, sativa for the day. It is an easy way to shop, but the plant—and the person enjoying it—are more complicated than two boxes.

Where the labels come from

Indica and sativa have histories as botanical terms. In modern cannabis retail, they are often used as shorthand for expected effects, while “hybrid” suggests a mix. The same words can mean different things to different growers and sellers.

Do they predict your high?

Not reliably on their own. Research comparing commercial cannabis samples has found that familiar strain labels do not consistently correspond to a distinct chemical profile. A name or category cannot tell you exactly how a product will feel to you.

That does not mean your own experience is imaginary. It means the label alone leaves out details: cannabinoid content, amount consumed, method, your tolerance, and individual response all matter.

A better way to read the menu

Start with the product format and the THC and CBD information. If a tested terpene profile is available, it can help you explore aromas, though an individual terpene is not a promise of a specific mood. Keep notes on the products and amounts you actually enjoy.

The takeaway: Use indica and sativa as conversation starters, not guarantees. The label is one small part of a much bigger picture.
