Cannabis comes in more forms than flower. Tinctures are liquid cannabis preparations sold in small bottles, often with a dropper. Their appeal can include portability and the ability to measure a portion—but strength and directions vary considerably from one product to another.

What is a tincture?

Health Canada describes tinctures as cannabis extracts made using alcohol, oils, or glycerin. Products sold as tinctures may contain different amounts of THC, CBD, and other ingredients. Check the label rather than assuming that every bottle has the same formulation.

How are tinctures used?

Depending on the product and its instructions, a tincture may be used under the tongue or swallowed. Some liquid can be swallowed even when it is placed under the tongue, so absorption and timing can vary. Follow the product’s directions and ask a qualified professional if you have questions.

Health Canada notes that effects from products dissolved under the tongue may begin in about 15–40 minutes and peak later. Swallowed cannabis can take longer; full effects after ingestion can take up to four hours. These are estimates, not a clockwork prediction. Taking more too soon can increase the chance of an unpleasant or excessive experience.

Reading the label

Look for the amount of THC and CBD per milliliter or per serving, the size of a serving, other ingredients, and the manufacturer’s directions. A dropper marking is a volume measurement; the amount of THC in that volume depends on the product’s concentration. Total bottle content is different from the amount in one serving.

Considerations before use

THC can impair coordination, judgment, and reaction time. Avoid driving or operating machinery while impaired, and avoid combining cannabis with alcohol. Cannabis can interact with medications and other health products; a pharmacist or other qualified health professional can help with individual questions. Store products securely, in their original packaging, away from children and pets.

The takeaway

Tinctures are one way to explore cannabis beyond flower. The product’s ingredients, strength, route of use, and timing all matter—so read the specific label and give the effects time to develop.
